Enlightening Writing Course and My Writing Tips

Wong Kam Lok Jimmy (4D)

As you all know, a 7-day writing course which is organized by the British Council was held in the summer vacation. I am one of the participants. Today, I'm going to share my experience during the course and some writing tips -- I'm sure that's what you want.

Let's talk about the course first, it was a wonderful course. Everyone joining the course felt enjoyable. We have learnt a lot of skills on how to write better in the camp. They're useful and I'll talk about them soon. But if you ask what the most impressive part in the course is, I will say the tutor. Our tutor is called Chris Wong. He was really humorous and enthusiastic. His sense of humour brought peals of laughter from us. His lively presentation skills and interaction with students made the course never boring.

We really engrossed in the lesson. The most impressive activity in the course was the tutor asked us all to stay in a room for half an hour and required us to use our mind to observe the room, try to find ideas for writing in that room. Before the activity, I've never thought that writing ideas can come from anywhere in our life! I acquired plenty of advanced writing skills during the course. They helped us to write much better than before.

It's time to move on to the topic you're interested in. First of all, I am going to discuss about the setting of story. The setting of story is the most important part of a story. If you don't have an exotic setting, you cannot draw your reader's attention to your story! At that time, your great plot may be useless because readers have stopped reading your story!. From my point of view, good setting should have an essential element - imagination! The best example is Harry Potter. Its setting is very imaginative, isn't it? The fantastic magic world of Harry Potter attract readers continue to read the story. So, an attractive setting may be a brilliant start of your story.

Next, being equally crucial is the use of dialogue. If you want to add some features to your story, a well-written dialogue is what you desire. Dialogue can show the feature of different types of stories. For example, a comedy ought to have a humorous dialogue. In addition, speaking verb can help a writer to express the feelings and personalities of the characters. The personality of the character in your story can be revealed if you use speaking verb well. That's why dialogue is indispensable in a story.

Last but not the least, the moral message of story. When you find that your story is wonderful -- well-written dialogue, interesting setting, intriguing plot......, you can try to add a moral message to make your story perfect. A message should be the hardest part to create in writing. Since it will be the theme of the story. But if you do well in this part, your story can be brought up to another level. Romeo and Juliet is exactly what I am talking about. The message of love should be ranked higher than hatred makes reader feel that Romeo and Juliet is not only a love story. It is also critical to people too!

Overall, I am glad to have joined the course and learn plenty of writing skills. It is also happy to share what I learnt from the course!
